great things are happening

In our county there are some beautiful, walkable places.  Places like Cocoa Village and Downtown Melbourne come to mind.  In every part of the county we are making strides toward greater pedestrian-friendliness.  Titusville has a cool little historic main street, Cocoa Beach's downtown is getting some revitalization, even Palm Bay which doesn't really have a downtown is in the process of creating one, and it looks like so far it's shaping up to be a pretty good, walkable plan.

walkability in Brevard County

work to be done

But throughout most of the county you will see places like this Brevard county road pictured on the left...

The environment along the side of this road is very unfriendly to walking, and this is pretty much the picture along the vast majority of roads in our area.  I notice a few problems here.  There is a very small sidewalk with no protection from speeding cars in the roadway.  The vehicle lanes are wide and encourage high speeds.  There is no shade on the sidewalk to shelter walkers from the Florida sun, and the businesses are set way back from the street with the parking in front of the buildings.  Imagine how unsafe and uncomfortable it would be if you were a mother pushing her child in a stroller trying to walk to one of these businesses?  It would be a very unsafe and unpleasant experience, so most people will choose to drive given the option.  These conditions can and must be fixed.
